Major Events and Milestones in Horizons History
The National Horizons Student Enrichment Program, Inc. began at New Canaan Country School in Connecticut in 1964. Now there are 16 affiliates across the country serving over 1250 students and partnering with 211 public schools. To learn more, visit www.horizonsnational.org
1999:Horizons Atlanta begins serving low-income students from public schools in the Sandy Springs area in partnership with Holy Innocents' Episcopal School with a kindergarten class of 12 children. The Community Action Center played a key role in developing the first program and Holy Innocents' Episcopal Church provided initial funding and the school contributed in-kind classroom space.
2003:Arthur Blank Family Foundation awards Horizons an Organizational Effectiveness Grant enabling consultant Deborah Richardson and current CEO, Atlanta Women's Foundation, to assist the organization with board development & strategic planning.
2004:John and Mary Franklin Foundation awards a three-year grant of $22,500 each year to provide services for middle school grades 6-8. This is the largest grant awarded by this Foundation. Horizons Atlanta hosts national meeting of teachers & executive directors. Kathryn Hardy receives the Lynn McNaught Teacher of the Year Award from Horizons National.
2005:Public schools associated with Horizons include High Point Elementary School, Heards Ferry Elementary School, Spalding Drive Charter School, Sandy Springs Middle School, and Ridgeview Middle School. Horizons has a 92% student retention rate.
2007:Horizons graduates 7 of its original 12 students from the eighth grade. A total of 9 eighth grade students graduated.
2008:Horizons Alumni begin serving as volunteers during the Summer Program.
